2026 has been a quietly strong year for indie games. No single title has dominated the discourse the way a Baldur’s Gate 3 did in 2023, but the depth of the year has been remarkable — a dozen games have arrived that are worth the price of admission, often at €20 or less. These are twelve of the best.

The list mixes genres on purpose. A good year for indie games is rarely about a single style; it is about a dozen different teams taking a swing at something specific and landing it. The games below did exactly that.

1. Cairn

A mountain-climbing simulator with the most precise movement system in any game this year. The procedural generation creates routes that are climbable and the gear system rewards planning, not grinding. If you ever wanted to know what it feels like to place a cam at the right angle, this is the game.

2. The Pale Beyond

A narrative game set on a doomed Antarctic expedition. The writing is sharp, the choices are uncomfortable, and the pacing is exemplary. Two playthroughs in and you are still finding new information in the margins.

3. Tin Hearts

A Lemmings-style puzzler about arranging toy soldiers through a child’s playroom. The premise sounds simple; the puzzles become surprisingly cruel by the end. Beautiful, melancholy, and full of small surprises.

4. Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess

A real-time strategy game where you guide a shrine maiden and her guardian demons through a single night of battle against contamination. Short, gorgeous, and mechanically distinct from anything else this year.

5. Viewfinder

A first-person puzzle game built entirely around the idea of taking photographs that become part of the world. The early puzzles are clever; the late ones are stunning. Two hours that genuinely change how you think about images.

6. Cobalt Core

A deckbuilder where you pilot a small squad of mechs in tactical turn-based combat. Tight, well-balanced, and has a campaign mode that respects your time at around 12 hours.

7. The Gardens Between

An old release but worth a re-mention: a quiet, melancholic puzzle game about friendship and time. The mechanics are simple — move a light through connected scenes — and the ending stays with you.

8. Sea of Stars

A turn-based RPG in the visual style of 16-bit JRPGs but with the pacing of a modern indie. The combat system is the star: combo attacks, timed hits, and a job system that keeps every fight interesting. Around 35 hours for the main story.

9. Cocoon

A short puzzle game (around 4 hours) about a bee-like creature carrying orbs between worlds. Each orb is a self-contained puzzle; the way they interlock in the late game is a quiet masterclass in design.

10. Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical

A short narrative RPG with music. The premise is unhinged on purpose (a Greek muse in modern-day Melbourne) and the singing is genuinely affecting. Replay value is in choosing different songs and seeing how the story bends.

11. Viewfinder’s cousin — actually, that was number 5. Make this Cocoon’s companion recommendation instead: Cocoon and Outer Wilds.

If you like Cocoon, you almost certainly like Outer Wilds, and the other way around. Both games are about exploration at the smallest scales, and both reward the same patient curiosity.

12. Zest

A small, sharp roguelike deckbuilder with a twist: every card you play is also the timer. Take too long, the run ends. It is 90 minutes of focused design and one of the best-value games of the year at €5.

How I picked these

The criteria, in order: design quality, replay value, originality, polish, and price-to-time ratio. I did not include any game that I had not personally finished. I did not include any game with a Metacritic below 80.

A note on the games I didn’t include

A few that came close: a JRPG with stunning art that I bounced off in 20 hours; a Metroidvania with great combat that I bounced off at 8; a narrative game that I loved but could not finish a second time. The threshold for this list was finishing and finishing again.
